Trabalhar nas regiões polares tem sempre um factor de risco, seja ele em relação à segurança (é necessário tirar vários cursos de primeiros socorros, engenharia, de segurança no mar, etc), seja ao nivel cientifico. Hoje quero falar deste segundo aspecto.
Qualquer projecto num cruzeiro cientifico a realizar na Antárctica tem de ter obrigatoriamente um factor de flexibilidade de tempo, isto porque a obtenção de amostras depende do estado do mar. Na Antárctica, apesar das temperaturas do ar no mar semelhantes (à volta dos 0 graus) tanto pode estar um céu limpo lindo...
Como pode estar um nevoeiro cerrado, a nevar...

Hoje estamos em mar agitado...e tal como previsto, ter um plano B é sempre útil. Ontem, tudo correu como planeado, com numerosas amostras obtidas mas hoje o tempo está pior e algumas actividades foram adiadas....quanto às aves marinhas... elas continuam a fazermos companhia!

(Any research carried out in the Polar regions should always include weather conditions, as these might limit the data collection. Onboard of research cruises this is evident. If there´s too much ice the nets can not operate, if there is too much swell the same applies. The last 24 hours, the samples were collected but a bigger swell is planned for the following hours, which might reduce the samples collection...and remind us that are the weather conditions that also influence the science!)
