Cambridge, Palma de Maiorca e Aberdeen

Olá a todos, este Verão foi uma autêntica correria... de volta a Cambridge, onde o novo membro da nossa equipa, Miguel Guerreiro, trabalhou na ecologia de albatrozes na British Antarctic Survey. O seu estágio em Cambridge "teve 2 componentes, o trabalho laboratorial, efectuado nos laboratórios do British Antarctic Survey (BAS), e a parte de pesquisa e aprofundamento de conhecimentos, em que se resumiu á reunião com investigadores da área do meu estudo que se encontravam no BAS, usar a biblioteca do mesmo instituto e visitar a colecção do Museu de História Natural de Londres."

Depois foi uma importante ida a Palma de Maiorca, para o Simposio Espanhol das Ciências polares, de modo a fortalecer as ligações Portugal, Espanha. Houve apresentações orais, posters, e paineis de discussão, incluindo uma directamente dirigida aos jovens cientistas.

Por fim, foi uma ida muito rápida a Aberdeen, para receber o prémio Marta T. Muse, que correu bem. Este Verão foi sempre a correr...que venha o Outuno (de momento ainda não pois está uma onda de calor)!!!

III Conferência Polar | III Conference on Polar Sciences

A III Conferência das Ciências Polares terá lugar na Universidade de Coimbra no dia 12 de Abril 2011 (ir a http://CIENCIAPOLAR.WEEBLY.COM). Os objectivos desta conferência na Universidade de Coimbra consistem em reunir as equipas polares portuguesas para rever que desenvolvimentos cientificos tiveram lugar no último ano, qual o estado da estrutura polar portuguesa (após a extinção do Comité Português para o Ano Polar Internacional), identificar futuras oportunidades cientificas, e obter informações sobre as vantagens que a comunidade cientifica polar portuguesa pode obter de organizações internacionais como a Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research (SCAR), do International Arctic Science Committee (IASC), do European Polar Board (EPB) e da Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS). Esta informação é essencial para consolidar um programa de investigação polar e maximizar a adesão ao Tratado da Antárctida que decorreu em Janeiro 2010.

The III Conference on Portuguese Polar Sciences will take place at the University of Coimbra on the 12 April 2011 (please do go to http://cienciapolar.weebly.com in portuguese). The main goals of the conference is to get together all teams of polar scientists in Portugal, understand what work has been carried out in the last 12 months, identify future opportunities in polar science, and obtain information about the advantages of joining the international community in major organizations (such as the Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research (SCAR), European Polar Board (EPB) and Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS)). This information will be essential to consolidate a strong national program and maximize Portugal joining the Antarctic Treaty in January 2010.

Bom ano de 2011!

Em 2011, pretende-se continuar a contribuir para a formação para jovens cientistas portugueses. Terá lugar na Universidade de Coimbra, uma workshop da Associação de Jovens Cientistas Polares (APECS) de Portugal no dia 11 de Abril 2011. Os seus objectivos são claros: saber quem são os jovens cientistas polares portugueses, saber o que fazem, perceber os seus objectivos futuros e identificar qual a estratégia a seguir da APECS Portugal. Pretende-se também saber oportunidades de emprego, bolsas e teses para estes jovens, quer em Portugal quer no estrangeiro. Vai ser um dia em grande!

Have a great 2011! In 2011, we wish to estimulate the education of polar early career scientists from Portugal. An APECS Portugal workshop will take place at the University of Coimbra on 11 April 2011. Its goals are fairly straight forward: who does polar science, what ealry career scientists are doing, understand their goals for the future as well as their strategy to achieve it. Also job, scholarships and thesis opportunities will be discussed. It will be a great day for Portugal Polar Science!

O tempo voa quando nos estamos a divertir. No meu caso, tem sido um combinar de muito trabalho. Após a reunião de jovens cientistas polares em Março, houve uma reunião de cientistas em Abril, em Lisboa, onde o Ministro Mariano Gago esteve presente e mostrou a sua satisfação do trabalho realizado por toda a comunidade cientifica polar portuguesa nestes últimos 3 anos. Deixou uma questão "Digam-me o que desejam para o futuro?" e de momento estamos a conversar o que poderá ser viável. Em Junho, houve a conferência do Ano Polar Internacional, em Oslo (Noruega), onde dei 10 (dez!) apresentações orais, participei numa workshop e até deu tempo para ser entrevistado pela BBC sobre o livro que escrevi (http://www.antarctica.ac.uk/about_bas/publications/books.php) sobre a identificação de lulas no Oceano Antárctico.

Depois houve outra conferência em Torino (European Science Open Forum) onde organizei uma sessão, a conferência da Sceintifc Committee for Antarctic Research (1 apresentação e representar Portugal em vários comités), uma conferência no Canadá (World Seabird Conference), e muito trabalho de laboratório em Cambridge.

E estamos em Setembro...percebem o porquê de sentir que o tempo voa...mas a ciência polar não pará também. Muito bom trabalho tem saído ultimamente, e após muito trabalho no campo no ano passado, agora a maior parte do trabalho é continuar sempre com um sorriso:) Mais novidades em breve!

Time flies when we are having fun! From March, after the workshop organized at Coimbra University, we had a meeting on polar research, in which the Portuguese Minister for Sceince and Higher Education was present, and acknowledged the great work that Polar researchers have been carrying out during the International Polar Year (IPY). In June, I attended the IPY Science Conference in Oslo, presenting 10 orals presentations (plus others as posters or co-author of other oral presentations). In July, I organized a session at the European Science Open Forum (ESOF) and in August, attended the Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research (SCAR) Conference in Buenos Aires, where I represented Portugal in various committees. In September, I went to Victoria for the World Seabird Conference, presenting my book on cephalopod beaks for the Southern Ocean, extremely useful for feeding ecology studies for seabirds of the Southern Ocean. No wonder time flies....
