Poluição dos oceanos| Ocean pollution

Como é possível uma lula ser confundida por um pedaço de plástico? Pois é, os albatrozes que passam a grande maioria do seu tempo no mar, confundem plásticos por comida. Os tamanhos, as cores e feitios são muito variados. Podem ser fitas, cordeis, partes de sacos de plástico, tampas de garrafas, tudo o que seja de plástico.  Já encontrei azuis, brancas, vermelhas e até cor de rosa. Sim, nas amostras da dieta de albatrozes, tenho encontrado isto tudo, entre os milhares de bicos de lulas e polvos que tenho estado a analisar...e fico bastante triste! 

               Os albatrozes que estou a trabalhar são excelente exploradores do mar, cobrindo áreas do oceano Pacifico, desde a Antárctica a águas tropicais, alimentam-se muito de cefalópodes (lulas, potas e polvos). O albatroz Diomedea exulans antipodensis, que se reproduz na Ilhas Antipodas (a sul da Noza Zelândia) vão à procura de comida em todo o Pacifico Sul, entre a Nova Zelândia e o Chile. O albatroz Diomedea exulans gibsoni, que se reproduz nas Ilhas Auckland (particularmente nas ilha Adams), explora a outra parte da Nova Zelândia até à Austrália. Isso é simplesmente magnifico!!! Como é interessante que estas duas espécies de albatrozes, muito similares, exploram áreas quase totalmente diferentes dos Oceanos. 

E ambas comem plásticos (tal como o albatroz viajeiro Diomedea exulans, que estudo na Geórgia do Sul), por engano! E isso tem consequências na sua vida e nos seus filhotes. Em vez de estarem a digerir alimento, têm algo que é poluente, que ocupa espaço, pode obtruir a sua respiração ou acesso ao estomago, pode os levar a morrer de fome, diminuir o apetite, reduzir o seu crescimento  e que lhes pode afetar (por exemplo um pedaço de plástico bicudo poderá perfurar o estômago do albatroz; outro exemplo é assimilar elementos polutentes). É conhecido que a ingestão de plásticos por albatrozes poderá levar à sua morte, mesmo que a eficiência de assimilação de comida com a presença de plásticos no seu sistema digestivo não diminua.  Este é um dos nossos resultados indiretos desta expedição. Por isso, quando virem alguém a tirar coisas para o chão, pensem nos albatrozes que confundem plástico por comida...

How a squid can be confused with a piece of plastic? Well, albatrosses spend most of their time in the open Ocean and they do confuse them.  The sizes, colours and shapes of the plastic can vary widely. They can be tape, bottle taps, pieces of plastic ropes, literally anything that is made of plastic that floats. I already found them blue, white, red and even pink. From the food samples that I have been analyzing in the last couple of months, I have found it all, between thousands of beaks of squid and octopods I have been studying...and makes me really sad! These albatross species are brilliant sea explorers, covering huge areas of the Pacific Ocean, from the Antarctic to the tropical waters. The albatross Diomedea exulans antipodensis, that reproduce in the Antipodes Islands (south of New Zealand), forage in all the Pacific Ocean, from east of New Zealand to Chile. The other species of albatross, Diomedea exulans gibsoni, that reproduces in the Auckland Islands (particularly in Adams Island) forage on the other side of New Zealand, mostly between the West of New Zealand to the East coast of Australia. This is AMAZING!!!! It is so fascinating how these albatross species, very similar morphologically, do cover so different areas of the Ocean for food. And both confuse squid with plastic, just like the other albatross species I study, the wandering albatross Diomedea exulans. Instead of eating proper food, they have something else that occupies space and can obstruct breathing or food access to the stomach. Furthermore, it can decrease appetite, reduce growth and even causing death. This is one of indirect findings of our studies this year. Therefore, is you see someone throwing something on the ground, say something (telling then to put it in a bin) and think of the albatrosses that confuse plastic for food...
